Acid Coco grew up in Colombia surrounded by music. Vinyl and tambores (drums) were the soundtrack to their sleep patterns as they fell asleep in the corner of their parent’s house during yet another party. Cumbia, salsa and the hip rhythms of Colombia all had their moment on the record player, but so did the ubiquitous sounds of rock, bolero, pop and classical. It was their musical education, creating an enduring link between music and communion that they’ve never forgotten: music brings us together.
It’s these early memories that the duo recall on “Sin Salida”, the third single from their upcoming debut album, Mucho Gusto. “When we were composing this song, it started as a joke and in the end something magical came out of it”, says the duo. Magic is the word. “Sin Salida” channels the spirit of Barranquilla carnival through an acid lens, a dose of what they like to call “punk caribeño”. With its distorted bass, lo-fi beats and Andrea’s passionate yet restrained vocals this is what Suicide or “Warm Leatherette” would have sounded like if they’d started life on the Caribbean coast.
The track follows on from Mucho Gusto’s earlier singles, the cumbia “Yo Bailo Sola”, with its feminist-empowering chorus, and “El Amor de Mis Amores”, an Afro-Colombian champeta with tongue-in-cheek lyrics that threatens to erupt into a full-on rave.
