Colombian duo Acid Coco show the need to be strong in love amidst a sugar-rush of electro-Caribbean rhythms Hot on the heels of their breakthrough debut, Mucho Gusto, Acid Coco are back with a new single, “Hoy Como Siempre”, continuing and evolving their signature electro-punk-cumbia sound. “Hoy Como Siempre” (“Today, As Always”) starts with a swirling, 40-second lead-in of zouk guitars with light touches of electro, moving on to incorporate further influences from the Colombian Caribbean with rhythms bouncing off the resistance of the unrelenting percussion.
In comparison to this carnivalesque production, the lyrics are bittersweet. The duo’s debut album was marked by its vignettes of Colombian life, of the highs and lows of romance and how Colombian women, in particular, needed to empower themselves; this theme continues here, the protagonist of the song fighting carnal urges to tell her suitor: “Today, as always / I tell you no / you are not up to the job... you don’t have what they call sweetness” (“Hoy como siempre / Yo te digo que no / Tu no estas a la altura… Tu no tiene eso que llaman dulzura”).
And the reason for resistance: “I am a free bird / And you can't catch me” (“Yo soy un pájaro libre / Y no me podrás atrapar”); the need to not be chained to someone else’s ideas. There can be passion, “lips that melt like cotton candy”, to quote the lyrics, but is that enough? Acid Coco want more.
The single is accompanied by a contemplative video showing a couple alone, in the middle of nature. Although there is electricity between the two of them, there is an unease too – they hardly touch each other. Perhaps, like the narrator of the song, they need to find the right balance of power, to share in love and not submit to it.
“Hoy Como Siempre” is the first single from Acid Coco’s second album, which will be released later this year.
lyrics
Y no me podrás atrapar
Hoy como siempre
Yo te digo que no
Hoy como siempre
Yo te digo que no
Hoy como siempre
Yo te digo que no
Tu no estas a la altura
Hoy como siempre
Yo te digo que no
Tu no tiene eso que llaman dulzura
Hoy como siempre
Yo te digo que no
Tu no estas a la altura
Hoy como siempre
Yo te digo que no
Tu no tiene eso que llaman dulzura
